ACTIONS (2017)

for any number of instruments (variable duration)

commissioned by the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-College

Two sets of cards - one for full ensemble and one for one or more soloists - that can be sequenced and layered in any order. Cards range from simple verbal instructions, to game-like proposals, to vague cryptograms. Decisions can be made based around two small fragments shared musical material (called THE MANTRA and THE CHORD.)

Score was originally mailed to the ensemble as a physical, gift-wrapped box, containing miscellaneous toys and sound devices as well as a USB drive with potential electronic cues.

The premiere was titled 19 Actions in accordance with the amount of actions realized on stage.
